For meditation atmosphere and celebration the use of incense has been established throughout history. |
The making of incense has long been established throughout the history of humanity. This has led us over many years, on a journey through time and cultures in the creation of our own blends. Arcania Apothecary owes much of its knowledge and deepest gratitude to the Indian, Japanese, Native American, Nepalese, Tibetan, African, Egyptian, middle Eastern and British herbalists, perfumers and Shaman. These men and women today keep alive these ancient traditions, sharing not only their wisdom and friendship, but also the vital botanicals required in the making of our blends. In the bringing together of these many cultures and wisdoms, the thread that links us all is the spirit of human kind and our communion with nature.
Break the charcoal tablet into two. Take one half, hold with tweezers and place over a naked flame for 10 seconds. This will ignite the charcoal and it will crackle for up to 1 minute. During this time place charcoal into your incense dish, fan gently with a feather for 2-3 minutes until it is aglow.
Sprinkle a few granules of incense into the centre of the charcoal, as it burns you will experience the wonderful multi layers of aroma. Allow 10-15 minutes for the layers of scent to synergise within the atmosphere to experience the whole fragrance.
Burning will only last a few minutes, yet the fragrance and subtle change in atmosphere may last for several hours when used inside.
When burning small amounts of incense we suggest the tablets are broken to make your packet last longer. Our ‘mini dish’ is designed for half a charcoal tablet to allow airflow. Each tablet will remain hot for up to 1 hour. Store charcoal tablets in an airtight container once opened. If the charcoal becomes even slightly damp, it will not burn.
Light charcoal either outside or in a well ventilated room away from combustible materials. The smoke released from the charcoal is unpleasant, do not inhale, it will last for about 30 seconds before the charcoal begins to glow.
Always use tweezers when handling the charcoal and use a purpose designed incense dish or bowl of sand. The incense dish will itself become too hot to handle safely, so place it where it is not possible for it to be knocked over and away from combustables. When the incense burning is complete, leave ashes for a minimum of 4 hours. DO NOT DISPOSE INTO A BIN; there could be embers alight - empty into sand or earth. Keep burning incense and materials away from children and animals.
